What Is Beauty?
January 26, 2016
I believe beauty comes in all shapes, forms, and colors. Too many times we get stuck on the materialistic things and all the characteristics and qualities we form in our mind of what beauty is. Think for a minute. What is beauty to you? What do you notice first? What catches your eye? Is it the clothes someone wears or the makeup on their face? We all find and see beauty differently, but many times what we see as beautiful, is all on the outside. The surface appearance. Truthfully, I find myself looking at the superficial things. I love big shaped eyebrows haha! I love looking at the girls who apply their makeup flawlessly. I mean, those things aren’t wrong per say. But when we focus solely on appearance we forget about the person on the inside, the person underneath all the makeup and clothes.
This past year I attended a women’s conference in El Paso, Texas. There was a certain speaker I just couldn’t get enough of. The way she carried herself… such confidence. She shared her heart with us so openly and freely. All I could see was pure beauty and that beauty carried through every part of her as she spoke. There are so many women I know that constantly speak out their shortcomings, or the things they think are shortcomings, but I see only beauty. Beauty that has been cultivated in their hearts with each trial they have faced and pushed through. That is beauty! Hearts that continue to love even when they’ve seen and experienced so much. Do you know a woman like that?
I am currently reading an amazing book by Stasi Eldredge called “Becoming myself- Embracing God’s dream of you”. She writes, “Being beautiful is a quality of spirit recognized primarily in a woman whose soul is at rest because she believes her God when he calls her lovely. She is no longer striving to reach the worlds unattainable standards of beauty and acceptance but instead is receiving the inheritance that is hers as an image bearer of the living God. She is embracing who God has made her to be.” Being beautiful has nothing to do with your age, your weight, or even the shape of your body? How many of us actually believe that though? It is a difficult concept to grasp but until we do I don’t think we will find true freedom or what beauty really is.
We are so consumed with how we look and I believe its being pressed even more now with all that social media brings. We need the best photo and all the filters. We add or take away things in an effort to look better. I know I do it with my photos. I don’t think it can all be bad but if we’re not careful we can become preoccupied with only our outward beauty.
Your heart is where your beauty lives. I can certainly think of a few people who are what we think of as “beautiful” or “handsome” but sometimes those things can be distracting and hide who that person really is. When you really get to know them they may be very vain and shallow. So the question is, what is in your heart? What is beauty to you?
I believe we need to totally change our definition of beauty. Here is what Google says beauty is:
Beauty- a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.
Do you see that, it says “pleases the senses” but remember God looks at the heart. He sees your mind and actions. Let me give you one last example. My grandma, who I am named after, is 94 years old, we call her Annie Gram. This woman has been through so much but has remained a mighty woman of God and has been strong in her faith for over three times as long as I’ve been alive. Every time I see her she’s talking about the Lord and what He’s done or is doing. When I see that woman I pray I too will leave a legacy as incredible as hers. She is beautiful because her heart is beautiful.
So who are you on the inside? Does it come through when you speak and how you carry yourself. Remember. Beauty starts within and radiates on the outside. Let’s redefine beauty together.
