Creating a Family Mission Statement
September 29, 2016
A family mission statement encapsulates your idea of life and lays out your family's purpose, goals, and standards. I love the idea of a mission statement always evolving. A missions statement might speak to where you're at right now and how you'd like to be better. It can therefore change with time. The missions statement I've created for our family is currently very simple because we have a 3 year old and 4 year old but as we grow and learn it will change and evolve.
Perhaps you struggle with having a peaceful home. Maybe you and/or your family members are constantly fighting. Putting something together about keeping peace or being a peacemaker (Matt. 5:9) might therefore be a good place to start. When you find an area you feel strongly about, or things that can help make your family work better together, just start by brainstorming. When you have some main points down, write underneath them why they're important, possibly using scripture or examples for those points. Try not to make it too complicated and take into consideration those in your household and their understanding of concepts.
It didn't take me long to come up with qualities my husband and I believe in and stood for. As a family we are very active and can be competitive, that has a lot to do with our lifestyle. One thing I wanted to really instill in my children was that they always be kind and good natured towards others. And lastly I want them to know they are important, no matter what. That's how I developed our current family mission statement:
I Am BRAVE.
I Am STRONG.
I Have a Heart of Gold.
I Am Worth It!
It's very simple and to the point. Everyday we say this together and now my kids know it by heart. I don't ever want it to just be something we say so every now and then I make sure to go over each point with them and explain what they mean.
Flores Family Mission Statement:
I Am Brave - I talk about the definition of what brave means. Brave- endure or face (unpleasant conditions or behavior) without showing fear. I have been using this scripture verse:
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
This scripture isn't telling us we are strong and brave of our own accord. Rather, you are strong and brave for one reason. God is with you.
I Am Strong - Strong - able to withstand great force or pressure.
Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
I Have a Heart of Gold- This expression alludes to gold in the sense of “something valued for its goodness.” I want to instill the importance of honesty and being well-intentioned with everything we do.
I Am Worth It - Self-Worth-the sense of one's own value or worth as a person; self-esteem; self-respect. I always want my children to know they are valued and their ideas are valued. I use this to also show we all have worth and to respect others.
I ALSO THINK THOSE FIRST TWO POINTS ARE VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE OF OUR LIFESTYLE. WE ARE VERY ACTIVE AND LOVE DOING THINGS THAT ARE WILD, AND SO WE ALWAYS ENCOURAGE OUR KIDS TO BE BRAVE AND TRY IT ONCE. WE DON'T WANT OUR CHILDREN TO WALK IN FEAR OF LITTLE OR BIG THINGS.
That is just an overview to help you see how I made our family mission statement and how I use it. It is something we say daily and I remind them of it when certain situations call for it. Again, I believe this will evolve and change over time but we will stick with our main core values as a family.
Do you have a family mission statement? I encourage you to start one if you don't and ask for God's direction for you and your family as you write it. It's good to speak it as often as possible but I also encourage you to place it somewhere in your home as a reminder and for others to see. Let's strive to be intentional and have purpose for our families on a daily basis.
Be Brave. Have Courage.
